Business History :
Philippine Long Distance Telephone | PLDT When PLDT was incorporated and given the franchise to establish and operate telephone services in the country on November 28, 1928, a typhoon had just ravaged Eastern Visayas, Bicol Peninsula, and Samar. The ability to communicate amongst loved ones and across the country became crucial. Sadly, phone networks then were like disconnected intercom systems and you could only call people within your own small city. Filipinos were disconnected from neighboring towns, disconnected from friends in the other island and, needless to say, disconnected from the rest of the world. It was under this scenario that the law was signed giving birth to PLDT. What the new law hoped to achieve was to interconnect these "intercom" systems into a seamless nationwide network that would facilitate communication and delivery of services to the people, as well as spur economic development in the countryside. The first president of PLDT was Theodore Vail Halsey while Major J.E. Hamilton Stevenot, who represented the American firm General Telephone and Electronics Corp. (GTE), was elected executive vice president and general manager. Under the American owners of PLDT, many small phone companies in the provinces were acquired by the Company to help speed up the rollout and connection of these different phone systems all over the country. The management of PLDT was then set to lay the groundwork towards linking Filipinos to each other and, more importantly, to the world.

Life :Dula-Laurel narrates that the management of mall food courts were then looking for new offerings that would be easy on the budget but would satisfy the hunger of the customers. With a P50,000 capital, she approached a mall operator in Cubao, Quezon City to sell her concept, and with just a small food cart, and goto and tokwa't baboy on the menu, Goto King instantly became a hit across all classes of the market. "(Filipinos) all love to eat goto. However, it was considered street food and the usual impression was that it was not sanitarily prepared. So we repackaged it, improved its quality and then placed it in a mall setting where the customers can enjoy it in a clean and air-conditioned surrounding," she says. In 1987, the company opened its first 24-hour store along Timog Avenue in Quezon City.

It later expanded its operations as canteen concessionaire to various companies such as Purefoods (1981-1984) and Meralco (1984-1989). Catering services also grew to include institutional clients as well as major public events such as World Youth Day (1995). A new opportunity for Cater King Food’s growth presented itself with the establishment of Goto King in 1984. Goto King’s concept was to sell goto, a local merienda staple sold in carenderias and by ambulant food vendors, in air-conditioned comfort and with fast food convenience.

Business History :
Hapee Toothpaste
Cecilio K Pedro decided to compete with the multinational giants by producing locally made toothpastes and hit them where it would hurt the most — the selling price. He founded the Lamoiyan Corporation, which became the manufacturer of the first locally produced toothpastes “Hapee” and “Kutitap” (sparkle). They were sold in the Philippine market at 50 percent lower than the selling price of the well known foreign brands. Although Colgate countered by dropping the price of its toothpaste products 20 percent lower than their original price, Cecilio Pedro came up with another innovation that gave him a further edge in the local market scene. He developed multi-flavored toothpastes for children that came brightly packaged in tubes and boxes adorned with “Sesame Street” characters. Today, the market for the budget-friendly toothpaste brands has expanded to neighboring countries like China, Vietnam and Indonesia. However, the low-priced toothpaste was not the only strategy that took Lamoiyan Corporation to the pinnacles of success. The company was lauded for having the “Most Outstanding Program for Equal Employment Opportunity” by providing work opportunities to the country’s hearing-impaired community members.
